Law and Grace

Grace of God Theological Seminary

Theme: Law and Grace

Text: (Hebrews 8: 6-8)

Hebrews 8: 6-8But as it is, Christhas obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then would no place have been sought for a second.

For finding fault with them, He saith: “Behold, the days come,” saith the Lord, “That I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”

Thought: The purpose of this study is define clearly the difference between the two pacts – the two alliances, the difference between Judaism and Christianity, law and grace, word to the Jews and word to the Gentile, dispensation of Law and dispensation of Grace, before the cross and after the cross – for we may bear fruit for the glory of God.

1. The Law is a pact of condemnation and death.

a) II Corinthians 3: 7 – The ministration of death.

b) II Corinthians 3: 9 – The ministration of condemnation.

c) Galatians 3: 10 – For as many as are the works of the law are under a curse.

d) Hebrews 10: 1 – For the law having a shadow of the good things to come.

2. The Grace is a pact of reconciliation and life.

a) II Corinthians 3: 6 – Who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant.

b) II Corinthians 3: 8 – The ministration of the spirit.

c) II Corinthians 5: 18, 19 – The ministry of reconciliation.

3. The Law ended up in Christ.

a) Matthew 5: 17 – I came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill.

b) Romans 10: 4 – For Christ is the end of the law.

c) Hebrews 7: 18, 19 – For there is a disannulling of a foregoing commandment.

d) Hebrews 8: 13 – In that e saith, “a new covenant” He hath made the first old.

4. The Grace was instituted by Christ.

a)  John 1: 16, 17 – Grace and Truth came through Jesus Christ.

b) Acts 22: 14, 15 – The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know His will.

c) Acts 26: 16 – For to this end I have appeared to you, to point you as a servant.

d) II Corinthians 12: 1-4 – I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven.

e) Acts 20: 23, 24 – To testify the gospel of the grace of God.

f) Galatians 1: 11, 12 – The gospel which was preached by me, that it is not after man.

g) II Timothy 2: 8 – According to my gospel.

Final Word: The Law was for the Jews; it ended up already. Jesus fulfilled the Law in our place. He rescued us from the curse of the Law and instituted a new covenant of better and superiors promises: The Grace of God.

So be, thus saith the Lord!
